Serving the Children of Dexter and Beyond

Bicycle Rodeo

Dexter Sunrise Kiwanis sponsors a bike rodeo every year during the month of May.  For many years this was held in the municipal parking lot behind Bangor Savings Bank but in recent years it was moved to the parking area at Ridgeview Community School on the Fern Road.   The main aim of the rodeo is to teach bike safety to children in our community and as part of the rodeo bike helmets are given free of charge to all participants who need one.  The helmets are purchased by the Kiwanis club and fitted by Kiwanis member Val Albertini and each bike is given a safety inspection by mechanic Buzz Harding.

The Dexter Police Department is on hand to register each bike.  Children are asked to ride their bikes through a course that includes a figure eight, left and right turns with hand signals and starting and stopping to demonstrate they are able to ride safely.  A contest is held and 4th grade students are asked to design a logo for the rodeo each year.  The winning design is printed on drawstring bags given to all participants.  Sebasticook Family Doctors donates the bags as well as three new bicycles.  One of the bikes is given to the designer of the winning logo and on the day of the rodeo kids can sign up for a chance to win the other two bikes.
